Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELO-P)

The Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELO-P), funded by the California Department of Education (CDE), provides before school, after school, summer, and intersession learning opportunities for students (EC Section 46120). These programs are designed to enrich, not extend, the regular school day by supporting the whole child through engaging, hands-on, pupil-centered experiences.

According to CDE:

• Expanded learning means programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of pupils through enrichment that is pupil-centered, results-driven, includes community partners, and complements—but does not replicate—regular school day activities (EC Section 8482.1[a]).

• Expanded learning opportunities are not an extension of instructional time, but rather enrichment opportunities such as play, nutrition, and other developmentally appropriate activities (EC Section 46120[e][1]).

Through ELO-P, schools provide academic support, social-emotional learning, physical wellness, and enrichment opportunities that build on classroom learning while promoting creativity, collaboration, and community partnerships.
