Counseling and Supportive Services
All East Whittier City School District's (EWCSD) sites have a social worker/counselor available to them to provide support services. School Counselors & School Social Workers are mental health professionals licensed to provide services that promote social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment in school and in society. All counseling staff have Pupil Personnel Service credentials through the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Many possess other licenses such as Marriage, Family Therapy and Clinical Social Work.
EWCSD is also a training facility for interns who are working towards masters and/or doctoral degrees. Interns are provided with both individual and group supervision weekly. With the service of interns, the EWCSD Counseling Staff is better able to meet the needs of more students

My name is Lorena Duran and I am the School Social Worker/Counselor assigned to Mulberry Elementary since the 2003-2004 school year. I graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology and with a Masters in Social Work and Pupil Personnel Services Credential. I have worked in the field of academic supportive services since 1999. I have designed, implemented, and coordinated both afterschool and summer enrichment & tutoring programs. Through the years I have facilitated several workshops and classes for parents on how to get involved in their child's education and general parenting skills. For the last 3 years I have represented EWCSD on the Board of Directors for the SKILLS Foundation and most recently I sit on the Medi-Cal Administrative Committee for EWCSD.
I can be reached via email: lduran@ewcsd.k12.ca.us or via phone at 562.789.7082.
Community Collaboration
District counselors work cooperatively with several community agencies to promote safe and drug free schools. Counseling Staff participates in the Substance Abuse and Violence Education Task Force (SAVE), which was originated in EWCSD and has the participation of many community agencies: Department of Children and Family Services, SPIRITT Family Services, LACADA, SKILLS Foundation, Presbyterian Hospital, and local Law Enforcement.
The EWCSD also coordinates with the Intercommunity Child Guidance Center to provide services to families and individual student counseling to several of our district school sites. Parenting information is made available through Counselors and Community Liaisons.
Accountability
While individual counseling records remain confidential, data is maintained for counseling sessions, group presentations and in-services.
The California Healthy Kids Survey is administered to students in 5th and 7th grades annually. The information gathered provides valuable statistics regarding risk factors and allows us to provide evidence based practice, thus better meeting student needs.

The AACAP provides this important information as a public service and the Facts for Families may be duplicated and distributed free of charge as long as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is properly credited and no profit is gained from their use.
